The development of solidification microstructure is a nonlinear phenomenon which often is governed by the complex interplay of different processes. The understanding, in general, begins with the experimental observations. The microstructural development in monotectic alloys with a high degree of crystallographic anisotropy is complex and rarely studied. In this paper we present some experimental results of the solidification behaviour of Zn-Bi monotectic alloy with small and large departures from the equilibrium condition. The conclusions of a comparative analysis of these results with some of the existing theories are also presented
