Abstract

Adsorption of N on $Ni/TiO_2, Ni/Al_2O_3, Ni/Al, Ni-Ti$ alloy, $TiO_2$, and other surfaces prepd. in situ in an electron spectrometer was investigated by x-ray and UPS to understand the nature of the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) state in the annealed $Ni/TiO_2$ catalyst system. The annealed $Ni/TiO_2$ surface has a considerable proportion of $Ti^{3+}$ and exhibits dissociative adsorption of $N_2$ along with weak mol. chemisorption at 80 K just as an Ni-Ti alloy surface. This is in contrast with the nonannealed $Ni/TiO_2$ surface where there is only mol. chemisorption at 80 K similar to the $Ni/Al_2O_3$ surface. The adsorption behavior of the annealed $Ni/TiO_2$ surface is also different from that of $TiO_2$ (showing only physisorption), $TiO_x$ (reduced surface showing physisorption and dissocn.) or $Ni/TiO_x$ (dissocn. and stronger chemisorption as on $Ni/TiO_2$). The annealed $Ni/TiO_2$ surface may correspond to the SMSI state.
