$\alpha$ ,$\beta$-Unsatd. alkenones were converted into chlorobenzenemono-, di- and tricarboxaldehydes under Vilsmeier reaction conditions. Besides six known chlorobenzaldehydes the route gave, in a one-pot reaction, two new members of this class of compds., 3-methyl- and 3,5-dimethyl-2-chlorobenzaldehydes. E.g., 2-hexen-4-one gave 20% 4-chloro-5-methylisophthaldehyde (I).
