The interaction of cytidine with lysozyme was studied by using NMR spectroscopy. The binding of the nucleoside affected the histidine-15 residue of lysozyme. An upfield shift of the proton resonance of the histidine-15 $C_2$-proton suggests stacking of the aromatic ring of cytidine over the histidine residue. The results indicate the importance of sugar geometry in the binding process.
