Abstract

On the basis of the dispersion model for the gas and liq. phases and the sedimentation-diffusion model for the solid phase, the steady state performance of an isothermal cocurrent flow bubble column slurry reactor with a 1st-order surface reaction is analyzed. The system equations are solved using the orthogonal collocation method. Numerical evaluation shows that the effects of slurry phase mixing are very significant whereas the effects of gas phase mixing are negligible. Conversion of the gas component increases with decrease in the slurry phase backmixing. This enhancement in the conversion is more pronounced at higher particle sizes and lower catalyst loadings. The conversion reaches a min. with respect to the particle size, showing that specified conversions can be obtained with larger particles also.
