Abstract

A novel, versatile one-step synthesis of o-dichlorobenzaldehydes has been developed. Acyclic \alpha,\beta-epoxy ketones undergo the Vilsmeier reaction to afford o-dichlorobenzenemono- and dicarboxaldehydes whereas cyclic \alpha,\beta epoxy ketones gave o~lichlorobenzenecarboxaldehydes and chlorobenzenedicarboxaldehydes.
