Abstract

We model dilute lyotropic smectics as a periodic stack of compressible-fluid membranes with width w separated by an incompressible background fluid of thickness d-w. We calculate the dynamical modes for this model as a function of the wave number q. For qd \ll 1, we find precisely the hydrodynamic modes of a two-component smectic. For qd \gg 1, we find various non-hydrodynamic modes which may be observable in experiment
