Abstract
A superconducting thallium cuprate oxysulfate of the composition $Tl_{0.5}Pb_{0.5}Sr_4Cu_2 (SO_4)O_y$, $(P4/mmm, \b{a}= 3.85 \.{A}, \b{c} = 16.6 \.{A})$ related to the 1223 type cuprate family has been characterized. Infrared spectra show that the sulfate ion is present as a bidentate ligand as expected from the structure.
