Abstract
Double layer cuprates of the formulae $LaSrLnCu_20_6$ (Ln = Y or rare earth) and $La_{2-x}Ba_XACu_2O_6$ (A = Ca, Sr) have been prepared by the tradltzonal ceramlc method and also by heating CuO, $KCIO_3$ and a carbonate mixture obtained by coprecipitation. All these cuprates are tetragonal with the I4/mmm space group. While cuprates of the type $LaSrLnCu_20_6$ are always insulating independent of the method of preparation, $La_{1.6}Ba_{0.4}SrCu_20_6$ showed an onset of superconductivity at 60k. this appears to be the second such cuprate of the $A_nB_nO_{3n+1}$ series with n = 2 exhibiting superconductivity.
